Many thanks for this well researched article with an explanation of the forces and vested interests that resulted in the current situation. It reminds us to stay vigilant towards the dominant players today who promise the next possible future. As a former colleague once said, "when you observe a trend in society with strong drivers, ask yourself: cui bono, who will benefit from it, follow the money and you will understand".

That being said, the only caveat I would like to add is: since societies are complex systems with many agents of variable strength and different agendas, the overall observed behaviour might be more incidental than deterministic; it is perhaps rather a result of many forces and feedback loops operating over time. The outcome might simply look like driven by one dominant force only with the benefit of hindsight from a historic perspective.
