Your comment about the US middle class is confirmed by an Episode 4/8 of the BBC documentary "Why Poverty", https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01pblv4/episodes/guide , which shows the evolution of the US income distribution over the past 50 odd years, something which also appeared in the Financial Times, too.

Last, but not least, with regards to a potential model for society, you may be interested in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Looking_Backward . It is a very positive description of an ideal society packaged in a short novel.
